Nigerian Military Wrestlers Shine on the World Stage, Clinch Gold and Silver

In a remarkable display of skill and tenacity, the Nigerian Military Wrestlers have excelled at the 36th World Military Wrestling Championship in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Friday, December 1, 2023, securing both gold and silver medals.

According to a Statement issued to Defence Correspondents by the Director Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Corporal Hannah Reuben, a formidable female wrestler, achieved the feat by triumphing over her Italian counterpart in the 68 weight category of women’s freestyle wrestling, claiming the coveted gold medal.

The Armed Forces of Nigeria wrestling team left an enduring impact on the global platform, earning accolades and making history. The distinguished medal was presented to Corporal Reuben by Mr. Dirk Shwede, the Vice President of the International Military Sports Council (CISM).

This milestone marks the first time that the Armed Forces of Nigeria has clinched a gold medal since participating in the CISM World Wrestling Championship. Another noteworthy performance came from Lance Corporal Ojolaide Esther, who secured a silver medal in the 72 weight category earlier in the event.

Major General Emmanuel Onumajuru, the Chief of Defence Training and Operations, represented General Christopher Gwabin Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, along with Air Vice Marshal Abidemi Timothy Marquis, the Director of Sports at Defence Headquarters.

Both senior officers were present to witness the historic glory and emphasized the pivotal role played by General CG Musa OFR in ensuring the team’s success, acknowledging his unwavering support.
